UPDATES FROM THE FIELD

On the Klamath River, the Yurok Tribe and other communities who depend on salmon have come together to ask the Federal government to de-commission several obsolete, Klamath River dams owned by Pacific Corps.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Yurok Tribe and the irrigators of the Klamath Falls have finally begun talks to promote “a sustainable watershed for the Klamath River”. This is perhaps the first positive dialogue between these communities in a century. Yurok leader Troy Fletcher and Klamath Falls farmer Steve Kandra came together at a screening of “A Snow Mobile for George” to address a full house at the Ashland (OR) Independent Film Festival about their efforts.

Out in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, the news about Coal Bed Methane drilling is not so good. Natural gas exploration has continued to expand rapidly here and through out Montana, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. Without federal action, it will not slow.

Not surprisingly, the expanded drilling has devastated wild-life. The once abundant Sage Grouse is now endangered. If the Bureau of Land Management determines the Sage Grouse needs protection that could slow drilling operations, and could be a substantial relief to ranchers and wildlife alike. Urge BLM officials to protect the Sage Grouse!

Writing from ranchers in Wyoming's Powder River Basin:

> "'Protection' Policies only Protect Profits" by Ed Swartz a lifelong rancher. His ranch has been in his family for 104 years and the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations currently live and work on the ranch.

And, then write to Congress and ask them to help stop the plunder of public resources, and damage to millions of acres of the Mountain West.

One curious note about the Powder River Basin story: the Interior official that buried the water regulations that led to this disaster – Steven Griles – was convicted of a felony: He lied to Congress in the Abramoff scandal. He went to jail.

In New York City, the battle for health care, benefits, insurance goes on. The government has still not admitted any fault or responsibility for failing to label the World Trade Center a hazardous site, because if they did so, they would be responsible for thousands of health claims and untold numbers in the future.

The snowmobile continues its ride through the news. Sarah Palin’s husband races them. A federal judge in Washington DC recently banned snowmobiles from Yellowstone, once again.

But, the EPA still allows the production of two stroke engines in snowmobiles, water craft, lawn mowers and scooters.

Why haven’t we adopted the readily available alternatives to these polluting two-stroke engines? Should environmental policy base itself on science, or on which lobbyist has the best access?
